Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do encompasses varied kicking and hand techniques from Okinawan, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean styles.  Literally, Tang Soo Do means "The Way of the Chinese Hand," or "China Hand Way." In other words, it is named after the Chinese Tang Dynasty; the word "Soo" means "hand," and "Do" means "the way of."  Tang Soo Do emphasizes the development of "self; self-defense, self-control, self-esteem, self-motivation, self-improvement, self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-sacrifice. Our school's lineage can be traced back to the founder of Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do, Grand Master Hwang Kee!

Is Tang Soo Do safe for my children to learn?

Yes! In fact learning a martial art early in life helps the child to develop self-esteem, discipline, balance, coordination, focus, and respect for themselves and their elders.  There is no competition nor sparing at Sun Mountain Tang Soo Do.  Since a child's body is still growing and developing, we modify some of the techniques for them to ensure their safety.  We also teach how to properly fall and roll to prevent being injured.  Our teaching is geared toward the age and development of your child.  Children's classes are for boys and girls ages 5 and up.  Mothers are welcome to train with their children!

Will I have to purchase all that expensive sparing gear?

No, there is no sparing at Sun Mountain Tang Soo Do.  We teach the art of peace and do not promote fighting nor competition.  Our school emphasizes traditional martial arts training with proper etiquette, learning hyung (pre arranged movements also called forms),  techniques that include getting off the line of attack, blocks, punches, and kicks.  While there is partner and group activities, our instructor ensures a safe environment to prevent injuries and have fun!

Self-Esteem through Self-Defense

I have been asked many times in the last few months, "why are you only teaching women and children?"

During all the years I've trained in the martial arts, there has always been a shortage of women training.  I often found myself to be the only female in class for years at a time.  I have opted to train women and children ages 5 and up to provide a safe environment and one in which they can feel free to train without the added pressure that may take place with men present.  I also strive to provide a community of women doing what they want to do with like minded women.  Training in Tang Soo Do provides an opportunity to get in shape, make new friends, learn a fantastic martial art, learn self defense, and have fun!
